Software Engineer, One Data Platform American Express is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Software Engineer to join the One Data platform team within Enterprise Architecture. This role is a key part of the organization’s technology strategy and supports the design, development, and delivery of scalable platform capabilities that enable engineering teams across the enterprise to build and deploy microservices at scale. Enterprise Architecture plays a critical role in shaping the company’s technology direction through four core pillars: Architecture as Code, Architecture as Design, Governance, and Colleague Enablement. The One Data platform team is focused on building foundational technologies that empower teams across American Express to deliver modern, resilient, and high-performing software solutions. Design, develop, and deliver scalable, high-quality software solutions across the full stack using Java and Python for enterprise-grade platform services and applications. Lead the implementation of distributed systems with a strong emphasis on performance, reliability, maintainability, and operational excellence. Own end-to-end delivery of features, from design and implementation to deployment, monitoring, and production support. Act as a technical contributor in an Agile environment, guiding best practices in software engineering, testing, documentation, and continuous delivery. Collaborate closely with architects, product managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions. Build and evolve RESTful APIs, microservices, and event-driven systems with strong service contracts and backward compatibility. Improve CI/CD pipelines, automate testing, and enhance developer productivity through modern engineering practices. Identify bottlenecks, debug complex production issues, and perform root-cause analysis to drive long-term fixes. Develop systems with a focus on scalability, resilience, observability, monitoring, logging, and alerting. Contribute to cloud-native transformation initiatives, including containerization, infrastructure as code, and auto-scaling architectures. Take accountability for delivering high-impact outcomes aligned with team and organizational goals. 5+ years of professional software development experience, with strong expertise in Java and working knowledge of Python for backend or data-driven applications. Deep experience with Java ecosystems and frameworks such as Spring, Spring Boot, or equivalent technologies. Proven experience in full-stack development, including backend services and modern frontend frameworks such as React, Angular, or similar. Strong experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs, microservices, and service-to-service integrations. Solid understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, scalability, and performance optimization. Hands-on experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Cassandra, DynamoDB, or MongoDB. Experience with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes. Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation. Experience with messaging and streaming platforms such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or JMS. Practical experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP and cloud-native development patterns. Hands-on experience in test data generation, unit testing, and test execution. Experience with API design standards, Open API/Swagger, versioning, and contract-driven development. Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI. Proficiency in Agile/Scrum methodologies and modern software development lifecycle practices. Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience; advanced degree preferred.
