Job description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for. We’re looking for a senior editor to lead our visual journalism across Asia, driving the execution of new forms of storytelling and overseeing a team of graphics and multimedia journalists. This role is based in the Times’ Seoul newsroom. Visual journalists at The Times have investigated how China built a great wall of villages along its frontier and strong-armed its way into dominating the South China Sea, documented the Myanmar military’s campaign of terror against its own people and Taliban rule in Afghanistan, and reconstructed South Korean president’s botched martial law bid . They have revealed how drones have transformed the war in Ukraine . They have also devised ambitious multimedia approaches to explain the far-reaching impact of the Iran war, air pollution in India and American households’ reliance on Chinese goods . We want to do more of these kinds of stories. And we want to continue to transform how we work to bring visual reporting and editing into the core of how we show readers the world and hold power accountable. We will do this through compelling graphical explanations; urgent, immersive field reporting in photography and video; sharp visual news coverage; and investigations driven by deep reporting on imagery and data. This role reports to the assistant international editor for visuals in New York and collaborates with the Asia editor to help drive coverage of Asia. You will work closely with the lead video producer and photo editor in Seoul, the senior editor for visuals in London, and counterparts in photo, video, graphics and news design. This is an in-office position based in Seoul, and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. Main responsibilities: Collaborate with international editors to drive visual coverage of Asia. Coordinate, lead and edit the work of correspondents and visual journalists on visual stories. Serve as the leader of a small group of graphics/multimedia reporters focused on Asia, helping to create, design and edit multimedia coverage. In collaboration with the deputy International editor for visuals, plan and execute stories that use data analysis and visualization, photography, imagery analysis, open source investigation and other reporting techniques. Work with desk leaders to shape and execute our broader editorial strategy for visual journalism, including how we should work with partners in photo, video, graphics and news design. Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. You will report to the assistant international editor for visuals. Basic qualifications: Strong news judgment. Ability to identify and conceive ambitious stories, spot visual opportunities in reporting and develop them into a range of compelling visual forms. Skill pulling multiple visual disciplines together into multimedia projects, with an emphasis on visualization, explanatory visuals, digital design, use of video and other visual forms. A record of clear communication and strong collaboration with colleagues. The ability to write clearly, work on tight deadlines and edit to sharpen the relationship between visuals and copy.
