If you’re passionate about joining a community that challenges the curious to deliver work that matters, your journey starts here! The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities. HCII is seeking a dedicated Assistant Director of Learning Sciences to join the team! This position will play a critical role in supporting advancement in learning engineering research, research-informed educational technologies, and evidence-based learning experiences for grant-funded and externally facing learning initiatives. Core Responsibilities Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement across center initiatives and related collaborations. Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Stay current with both research and industry trends, standards, and advancements in educational technology. Research, Strategy, and Collaborative Initiatives: Collaborate with CMU faculty, research teams, RISE, Learnvia, and partner organizations on research-informed learning initiatives. Assist the Director in developing strategic plans, priorities, and goals for learning engineering research initiatives, grant-funded projects, and professional education collaborations. Support coordination for projects and research studies that evaluate learning design, learner support, and AI-enabled educational interventions in external and professional learning contexts, translating findings into design improvements. Translate evidence from learning sciences, learning analytics, and applying educational research into scalable practices for professional education audiences and related research initiatives. Contribute to partnership opportunities that extend the reach and impact of learning engineering research and research-based education projects. Senior Learning Engineering Project Work: Collaborate with research teams to design and develop high-quality, engaging, and effective learning experiences. Utilize data-driven insights and research to inform the design and continuous improvement of learning solutions and of the research theories underlying them. Stay current on research, emerging trends, and best practices in learning engineering and educational technology, and advise leadership by preparing reports and presentations to share findings and recommendations. Effective Uses of Technology: Evaluate and recommend educational technologies and tools, including Generative AI solutions, that enhance teaching, learning, learner support, and research-based improvement. Consult on and model effective uses of technology for research-informed education and for research-informing educational experiments. Collaboration and Communication: Communicate effectively with stakeholders to ensure transparency and alignment of learning engineering initiatives. Assist the Director in representing the learning engineering team in meetings, committees, and external partnerships.
