What’s Actuary in our Finance Division? The Actuarial Department ensures that Wellmark’s products are adequately priced to meet financial goals and reserves are established to cover Wellmark’s unpaid claim liabilities. Actuarial team members create models and perform analyses to support pricing, reserving and forecasting functions. The evolving health insurance environment provides team members opportunities to develop and utilize their actuarial skill set and technical knowledge.  What projects might I support? Although subject to change, examples of projects are included below:  Conduct experience studies and review of established procedures (i.e. claim trends, rating factors)   Perform research of premium and product data for competitive analysis  Assist with annual individual and small group market performance analysis  Produce ad hoc modeling for impacts of health care reform  Update large group market rating factors  Use Federal Actuarial Value (AV) calculator to determine actuarial values for various benefit designs  Support individual and small group annual and quarterly rate filings, including data collection, setting factors and populating rating templates  Assist with enrollment, claims and income projections for solvency testing and budget purposes  Collect, manipulate and analyze data, utilizing Microsoft Excel, Access, VBA and SAS for various ad hoc requests  Ready to bring your strengths to Wellmark? Here’s what’s next! If the position is a match with your passion and interests, submit your application today!   This internship will start in May of 2027, working a hybrid schedule from our headquarters in Des Moines.  Current student pursing a Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Finance, Accounting, Statistics or related program  Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Excel and Access.  Ability to analyze and organize data in a consistent and logical fashion.  ​​​​​​​Proven problem solving, innovation, and technical adaptation skills.  ​​​​​​​Ability to work independently and clearly communicate results of data analytics and modeling.   ​​​​​​​Good written and verbal communication skills.  ​​​​​​​Demonstrated ability to take initiative.  All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.
