Job Board

An online platform where employers post open roles and candidates search and apply.

A job board is a website or platform that aggregates job listings from employers and allows candidates to search, filter, and apply. General-purpose boards like Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and ZipRecruiter cast wide nets across industries and role types. Niche boards target specific sectors — Dice and Stack Overflow Jobs for tech, Health eCareers for healthcare, Idealist for nonprofit, AngelList (Wellfound) for startups, and Dribbble for design. The fragmentation of the job board market means active job seekers typically need to monitor several platforms simultaneously.

For employers, posting on job boards is just one recruiting channel. High-volume roles (customer service, retail) are often filled entirely through board applications; competitive senior roles often come primarily from referrals, recruiter outreach, or LinkedIn sourcing, with board applicants serving as supplementary pipeline. Applicant quality on general boards varies widely, which is why many companies layer ATS filters and screening questions on top of their postings.

For candidates, job boards carry a signal problem: roles posted publicly for weeks are often either very competitive (many applicants), hard to fill (specific niche or poor offer), or outdated (already interviewing internally but legally required to post). The 'hidden job market' — roles filled before public posting — accounts for an estimated 70–80% of hires, driven by referrals and recruiter outreach. Job boards work best as a discovery tool and market research source, not as the sole application channel.

Major Job Boards by Category

  • General: Indeed (largest by volume), LinkedIn Jobs, Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, Google Jobs (aggregator).
  • Tech: Dice, Stack Overflow Jobs, Wellfound (AngelList), Hacker News 'Who Is Hiring' threads.
  • Startup/early stage: Wellfound, Y Combinator Job Board, Climatebase for climate tech.
  • Nonprofit/mission-driven: Idealist, LinkedIn Nonprofit, Work for Good.
  • Remote-specific: We Work Remotely, Remote.co, FlexJobs.
  • Healthcare: Health eCareers, Doximity for physicians, Nurse.com.
  • Government and public sector: USAJOBS.gov.

How to Use Job Boards Effectively

Set up daily email alerts for your target role titles and filter aggressively by date posted — applications to listings older than two weeks have significantly lower response rates. Apply within 48–72 hours of a new posting going live for maximum visibility. Pair job board applications with LinkedIn outreach to someone at the company (not necessarily the hiring manager) who can create an internal referral. The board gets your resume in the system; the referral moves it to the top of the pile.

Example

A marketing manager is laid off and immediately sets up alerts on Indeed and LinkedIn for 'Marketing Manager' and 'Head of Marketing' roles in her metro area and remote. She filters for posts within the last 7 days and applies to 5–8 a day, but also cross-references each company on LinkedIn, connects with an employee at each firm within 24 hours of applying, and mentions her application in a brief note. Her response rate from referral-supported applications is 3× higher than from board-only applications.
