Project Management

The discipline of planning, organizing, and delivering work on time and within scope — required across virtually every management and senior individual contributor role.

Project management encompasses defining scope, sequencing tasks, managing resources, tracking progress, communicating status, and navigating stakeholders. It's expected at manager and senior IC levels across engineering, marketing, operations, and product functions. Formal methodologies include Agile/Scrum, Waterfall, and Kanban — but effective project management is fundamentally about keeping complex work moving under real-world constraints.

Typical time to job-readiness: ~2 months.

Learning Project Management

Beginner

Break a goal into discrete tasks, set timelines, and track progress. Practice scope definition and stakeholder updates before taking on anything complex.

Intermediate

Run a full project lifecycle — charter, stakeholder alignment, risk tracking, status reporting, and retrospectives. Learn Agile and Waterfall trade-offs and when each applies.

Advanced

Manage portfolios of concurrent projects, develop junior PMs, and connect project outcomes to measurable business metrics. Senior roles are assessed on past impact and comfort with ambiguity.

Key concepts

  • Scope definition — clearly documenting what is and isn't included before work begins
  • Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) — decomposing deliverables into tasks that can be assigned and tracked
  • Critical path — the sequence of dependent tasks that determines the earliest possible finish date
  • RAID log: Risks, Assumptions, Issues, Dependencies — the PM's instrument panel
  • Stakeholder mapping — identifying who cares, what they care about, and how often to update them
  • Change management — formal process for evaluating and approving scope or timeline changes

Common interview topics

  • Walk me through how you'd plan a complex project from scratch
  • How do you handle a stakeholder who keeps adding scope mid-project
  • Describe a project that went off-track — what happened and what did you do
  • How do you prioritize when multiple urgent issues compete for the same resources
  • What project management tools and methodologies have you used
