PMP Certification
Project Management Professional — the most recognized project management credential, issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI).
The PMP is the gold standard certification for project managers, demonstrating formal training in project planning, risk management, stakeholder communication, and delivery methodology. It's required or strongly preferred for project manager roles at government contractors, large enterprises, consulting firms, and healthcare organizations. Requires 36–60 months of project management experience to qualify.
Typical time to job-readiness: ~6 months.
Learning PMP Certification
Beginner
Audit your experience (PMP requires 36 months for degree holders). Start a structured prep course — the PMBOK Guide alone isn't sufficient for the current predictive + agile exam format.
Intermediate
Study all performance domains and practice with mock exams consistently. PMP has roughly a 60% first-attempt pass rate; disciplined practice is the differentiator. Schedule once practice scores stay above 70%.
Advanced
After passing, maintain with 60 PDUs over three years across technical, leadership, and strategic categories. Many PMP holders add PMI-ACP or Agile certifications to stay current with industry methodology.
Key concepts
- PMBOK performance domains — the current exam tests predictive and agile approaches equally
- DMAIC vs PDCA vs agile — knowing when to apply which methodology
- Scope, time, and cost — the triple constraint; changes to one affect the others
- Risk management — identify, assess, and create response plans before issues become problems
- Stakeholder management — identifying and managing expectations of everyone affected by the project
- PDUs (Professional Development Units) — required to maintain certification after passing
