Google Workspace

Google's suite of cloud productivity tools — Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet, and Calendar — used by most startups and a growing share of enterprises.

Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) is the cloud productivity platform used by over 10 million businesses globally, and is the dominant collaboration suite at startups, technology companies, and education institutions. It includes Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Drive, Google Meet, and Google Calendar — all cloud-native and designed for real-time collaboration. For roles at organizations running Google Workspace, proficiency with these tools is a baseline expectation and is listed explicitly on many administrative, operations, marketing, and business roles. Google Sheets proficiency — including formulas, pivot tables, and data validation — is particularly valued.

Typical time to job-readiness: ~1 week.

Learning Google Workspace

Beginner

Get fluent with the core four: Gmail (filters, labels, keyboard shortcuts), Google Calendar (scheduling, meeting invites, shared calendars), Google Docs (comments, suggestions mode, document sharing), and Google Drive (folder structure, sharing permissions). Google's own Workspace Learning Center covers all the basics for free.

Intermediate

Google Sheets beyond the basics: VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, IMPORTRANGE for pulling data between spreadsheets, pivot tables, data validation, and Apps Script for basic automation. Google Slides for polished presentations: master slides, consistent themes, and speaker notes. Google Meet features: breakout rooms, recording, and host controls.

Advanced

Google Apps Script for automating workflows across Gmail, Sheets, Drive, and Calendar; Google Workspace Admin console for IT administrators managing users, groups, and security policies; and integrating Google Workspace with third-party tools via Zapier or direct API. Power users who can automate reporting in Sheets or build internal tools with Apps Script are significantly more productive than those who use Workspace as a basic file store.

Key concepts

  • Google Docs: real-time collaboration, suggesting mode for edits, version history, and comment threads
  • Google Sheets: cloud-native spreadsheet with IMPORTRANGE for pulling data across files and Apps Script for automation
  • Google Drive: file storage and sharing; sharing settings (viewer, commenter, editor) control access
  • Gmail: filters and labels to organize high-volume inboxes; keyboard shortcuts dramatically speed up email
  • Google Meet: video conferencing built into Calendar; breakout rooms, recording, and screen share
  • Workspace vs Microsoft 365: functionally similar; the main choice is determined by organizational preference and existing infrastructure
