Google Analytics

The universal web analytics platform — tracks website traffic, user behavior, and conversion data, and is listed on virtually every digital marketing job posting.

Google Analytics (now GA4) is the most widely deployed web analytics tool in the world — used by over 28 million websites to track visitor behavior, traffic sources, conversion events, and audience demographics. For digital marketing, e-commerce, content, and growth roles, GA4 proficiency is a near-universal requirement. The platform integrates with Google Ads, Search Console, BigQuery, and Looker Studio, making it the center of most companies' marketing measurement stack. GA4's event-based data model replaced Universal Analytics in 2023.

Typical time to job-readiness: ~2 weeks.

Learning Google Analytics

Beginner

Navigate GA4: understand sessions vs users, traffic sources (organic, direct, paid, referral), and how to read the real-time, acquisition, and engagement reports. Set up a Google Analytics account on a test site and explore the interface.

Intermediate

Configure custom events and conversions, build Explorations (funnel analysis, path analysis), connect GA4 to Google Search Console and Google Ads, and use Looker Studio to build dashboards from GA4 data.

Advanced

BigQuery export for raw event-level analysis, custom dimensions and metrics, audience building for remarketing, and attribution modeling (data-driven vs last-click). Google's free Analytics Certification is a credible signal worth adding to your resume — it takes a few hours and tests practical GA4 knowledge.

Key concepts

  • GA4's event-based model — everything is an event (page_view, click, purchase); sessions and users are derived
  • Dimensions vs metrics: dimensions are attributes (country, device), metrics are numbers (sessions, revenue)
  • Traffic sources: organic search, direct, referral, paid (cpc), email, social
  • Conversions — events you mark as key actions; GA4 doesn't auto-detect them like UA did
  • Explorations — custom analysis workspace for funnel analysis, path analysis, and cohort reports
  • Attribution: how credit for a conversion is assigned across multiple touchpoints
