Forklift Certification

OSHA-required certification for operating powered industrial trucks — mandatory for warehouse, logistics, and distribution center roles.

OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.178 requires all forklift operators to be formally trained and certified before operating powered industrial trucks. Certification involves classroom safety training plus hands-on evaluation and must be renewed every three years. It's a baseline requirement for warehouse associate, logistics, shipping and receiving, and distribution center roles across most industries.

Typical time to job-readiness: ~2 days.

Learning Forklift Certification

Beginner

Complete an OSHA-compliant training program — typically 8–12 hours of classroom safety instruction plus hands-on evaluation. Most employers provide this as part of onboarding.

Intermediate

Certification is equipment-specific and site-specific — a new employer must re-certify you for their equipment and conditions. Refresher training is required every 3 years or after any incident.

Advanced

Additional endorsements for specialized equipment (order pickers, reach trucks, turret trucks, telehandlers) increase employability and pay rates in logistics and warehousing.

Key concepts

  • Equipment-specific certification — you must be certified for each type of forklift you operate
  • Pre-operation inspection — check brakes, controls, lights, tires, and fluid levels before every shift
  • Load capacity nameplates — never exceed the rated capacity for a given forklift
  • Safe speed and visibility: slow at intersections, horn at corners, travel in reverse if load blocks view
  • Pedestrian safety — forklifts have the right of way in designated lanes, but operators are responsible
  • Recertification required every 3 years or immediately after any accident or unsafe operation

Common interview topics

  • What types of forklifts are you certified to operate
  • Walk me through your pre-shift inspection routine
  • What do you check before picking up a load
  • How do you handle an unstable or uneven load
