.NET / C#
Microsoft's application framework and primary language — the standard backend stack at large enterprises, financial institutions, and government organizations.
.NET (and its language C#) is Microsoft's flagship application development platform. While less visible in startup circles, it dominates enterprise and government software — banking systems, insurance platforms, healthcare records, and large ERP integrations are frequently built on .NET. C# is a strongly typed, object-oriented language comparable to Java in design philosophy, and .NET's performance and Azure integration make it the default choice in Microsoft-ecosystem organizations.
Typical time to job-readiness: ~4 months.
Learning .NET / C#
Beginner
Learn C# syntax and OOP fundamentals, then build a basic ASP.NET Core Web API. Get comfortable with the dotnet CLI and NuGet package management.
Intermediate
Entity Framework Core for database access, dependency injection, xUnit tests, and proper error handling and validation in REST APIs.
Advanced
Async/await patterns, clean architecture (domain, application, infrastructure layers), and high-throughput optimization. Enterprise .NET roles assess system design with Azure integration.
Key concepts
- C# is strongly typed, object-oriented, and garbage collected — similar to Java but with more modern language features
- ASP.NET Core: the framework for building web APIs and web apps; cross-platform and high-performance
- Entity Framework Core: ORM for database access; maps C# classes to database tables
- Dependency injection is built into ASP.NET Core — services are registered in Program.cs and injected via constructors
- Async/await for non-blocking I/O: Task<T> is the standard async return type in .NET
- .NET ecosystem: NuGet for packages, dotnet CLI for project management, MSBuild for compilation
