AWS Certification
AWS certifications validate cloud skills at foundational, associate, professional, and specialty levels — the most in-demand cloud credentials.
AWS offers a tiered certification track from Cloud Practitioner (foundational) to Solutions Architect, Developer, SysOps, and DevOps Engineer (associate/professional) to specialty certs in areas like Machine Learning, Security, and Networking. AWS certifications are the most recognized cloud credentials and directly increase earning potential for engineers working in cloud-heavy environments.
Typical time to job-readiness: ~3 months.
Learning AWS Certification
Beginner
Start with Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) — a two-hour overview exam validating cloud literacy. Free-tier hands-on practice plus a structured prep course (A Cloud Guru, Stephane Maarek's Udemy courses) is the standard path.
Intermediate
Choose your associate: Solutions Architect (SAA-C03) for architecture roles, Developer (DVA-C02) for engineering, or SysOps (SOA-C02) for operations. These require real AWS experience to pass.
Advanced
Professional and Specialty certs (Solutions Architect Pro, DevOps Pro, Security Specialty, ML Specialty) validate expert-level knowledge and are meaningful hiring signals at senior levels.
Key concepts
- Certification tiers: Cloud Practitioner → Associate → Professional → Specialty
- Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) — the most widely held and requested AWS cert
- Well-Architected Framework: reliability, security, performance, cost optimization, sustainability
- The exam tests architectural judgment, not just memorizing service names
- Hands-on labs reinforce learning more effectively than reading whitepapers alone
- Recertification required every 3 years; passing a higher cert renews lower ones
Common interview topics
- Which AWS certification do you hold and how did you prepare for it
- Explain a service you learned about while studying — what problem does it solve
- What is the AWS Well-Architected Framework
- How would you design a highly available application using AWS services
