Account Management
Managing ongoing relationships with existing clients — retaining revenue, expanding accounts, and ensuring customers achieve their goals.
Account management focuses on post-sale customer relationships: ensuring customers adopt and derive value from a product or service, identifying expansion opportunities, and preventing churn. It's distinct from sales (which closes new business) and customer support (which resolves issues) — account management is about long-term relationship stewardship and revenue growth within an existing customer base.
Typical time to job-readiness: ~2 months.
Learning Account Management
Beginner
Learn your product deeply, map customer stakeholders, and establish a regular check-in cadence. The foundation of account management is trust — customers expand with people they rely on.
Intermediate
Conduct QBRs (Quarterly Business Reviews), identify and navigate expansion opportunities, handle renewal conversations, and manage at-risk accounts before churn becomes likely.
Advanced
Own strategic enterprise accounts, influence product roadmap based on aggregated customer feedback, and mentor junior CSMs. Assessed on NRR (Net Revenue Retention) and logo retention rate.
Key concepts
- NRR (Net Revenue Retention) — the primary AM metric; above 100% means accounts are expanding
- QBR (Quarterly Business Review) — structured meeting to review value delivered and align on next quarter
- Stakeholder mapping — identify economic buyers, champions, and blockers within each account
- Churn signals: declining usage, unresponsive contacts, missed QBRs, unresolved support tickets
- Expansion vs renewal — upsell/cross-sell to grow the account; renewal prevents churn
- Success plan — a documented roadmap of customer goals and how your product helps achieve them
